Why is "had been" wrong in this sentence? It makes perfect sense to me.?

I'm not sure why exactly, but I think "had been" sounds funny. I'd have said it should be "was." Maybe because "she had been the first woman" implies that at some point, she stopped being the first woman, which isn't possible.
