Why do we still have electoral colleges?

The Electoral College is of course defined by the Constitution, and insures that any person elected to be President will have support from broad areas of the country. The system has worked well over the centuries, and has the distinct advantage that in a close race it would be necessary only to recount a state or two, not the entire country.
